Warm up for work

Just found these really cute layering thermals.  You could wear them under your scrubs or just with a pair of jeans.  They are super warm and comfortable, made from really soft material.  Check them out!  I'm always cold when I'm wearing just medical scrubs in the hospital so I'm always on the look out for cute layering pieces!

Red or White...

We all need a drink once in a while (okay, maybe a little more than once in a while) especially if you're a nurse.  Here's a fun gift for a friend!  Hand painted wine glasses.  They have them for all occasions bridal showers, weddings, graduations, retirement, and my favorite- just for being a nurse.  Check them out!

T.V News

As a nurse I am always annoyed when I am watching a T.V show that is based in and around a hospital and the actors don't correctly portray nurses and doctors.  Mislabeled diseases, incorrect terms, wrong facts etc. - just make these shows unrealistic and not enjoyable...

The actress, Jada Pinkett Smith, fired the entire technical crew working behind the scenes of her Hospital based T.V show "Hawthorne".  Smith's mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones who worked as a nurse for her entire life, criticized the authenticity of the show's subject matter.  As a result Smith hired an entire new crew in order to ensure that the show would be genuine.  "...Things like how we put the cap back on the needle, or how we inject the needle, or how we resuscitate. (It's) very specific and we got a lot of nurses last year emailing and saying, 'We like the show but you're not really doing this and this.' At the end of the season I had a six-page email (from her mum). But this year she helped make a much better show, so kudos to her."

Bottom line...nurses know their stuff :)

FiveFinger Sneakers

As a nurse, I know that I am constantly on the look out for the most comfortable shoes to pair with my nursing scrubs. Recently I have been seeing a ton of runners and yogis walking around in these FiveFinger Sneakers. The design is supposed to stimulate and exercise every bone, muscle, joint, tendon, etc. while helping you maintain proper balance in whatever activity your partaking in. CHECK THEM OUT!

Nursing News!

An article written in the L.A. Times this past Friday discusses the closing of a unlicensed Nursing School in L.A. The school had taken in over 300 students, charged them tuition, and promised them a two year credited degree in Science. It seems that for year officials had been trying to warn people against the fraudulent nature of the school while trying to shut it down. Unfortunately many students were still lured by the promises of the school. Finally the school has been shut down for good and officials are trying to return as much tuition to the students as possible.

Home Births vs Hospital Births

Although by 1935, ninety percent of U.S. states outlawed home births, a recent article about a mother in Tennessee shows the resurgence of midwives. Karen Kramer, the subject of the article, discusses the differences between her hospital births and home births, and how she has come to favor the comfort of home births. Although midwives are becoming increasingly popular, 10 out of the 50 U.S. states still outlaw home births. Check out the article

Check this show out!

Finally a great show for teens that's not about pregnancy and drugs, this new MTV show "If you really knew me," is a great show that creates a forum for high school kids to open up to their peers and speak their mind. As we are all aware, most times people are judged and judge others on the surface- based on their looks, their weight, their clothing. This show breaks down stereotypes and allows kids to know that everyone is insecure and no one feels like they fit in-and that's okay.
